From a Caterpillar to a Butterfly - July 2005

Since we had my daughter, Cara's, birthday party so much earlier than her actual birthday I made her some special cupcakes to celebrate on her real birthday.  Her party theme had been butterflies and flowers (see post Butterflies and Flowers), so I decided to make these caterpillar and butterfly cupcakes to kind of continue that theme.

Caterpillar Cupcakes

I originally made the triangle cupcakes by mistake on a previous occasion when I didn't have enough muffin tins for the amount of batter I had.  I put four cupcake liners in a loaf pan, and when they baked they expanded against each other and the sides of the pan and formed triangles.  For these butterflies though I did it on purpose.  Of course, now they have cupcake molds in all kinds of different shapes, including triangles.  :)

So, the butterflies are just two triangle cupcakes touching that are decorated with icing to look like one butterfly.  The caterpillar is just a curvy line of regular cupcakes decorated with icing to look like one long caterpillar.  After having cupcakes we went with my mom to a butterfly center to see real butterflies.  :)

Butterflies and Flowers - June 2005

I made this butterfly cake and this flower cake for my daughter, Cara's, 6th birthday.  Her party theme was butterflies and flowers.

Blue Butterfly Cake

Pink Flower Cake with Butterfly Cookies

Blue Butterfly Cake and Pink Flower Cake Together

The butterfly cake is just a round cake that I cut in half and put the rounded edges together in the middle.  Then I iced it with buttercream and piped the body and antennae in between the two halves.  The flower cake was a round cake that I cut into the shape of a flower.  Then I iced it with buttercream to make it look like a flower.  The two little butterflies on the flower cake are sugar cookies decorated with food coloring that I asked my mom if she could make to help me out.  We put bigger butterfly cookies in the goodie bags decorated the same way as the small ones.  My mom also wrote the words on the butterfly cake for me.

Scooby Dooby Doo, Where Are You... - April 2005

These are two Scooby Doo themed cakes I made for my son, Caleb's, 3rd birthday.

Scooby Doo Paw Print Cake

Scooby Doo Bone Cake

Scooby Doo Paw Print Cake and Bone Cake Together

He had a Scooby Doo party.  For the brown 'Scooby Doo' paw print cake I just made a round cake and put four cupcakes around the top for toes and iced them all with buttercream.  I wrote Happy Birthday (not so well, but okay :) ) in the middle with blue icing.

For the white bone cake I made a small cake in a loaf pan to get a little rectangle and I made four small (6 inch I think) round cakes.  I placed the round cakes on the corners of the loaf pan to make it look like the shape of a bone.  Where the cakes overlapped I cut that part off the little rectangle loaf cake so the round cakes could fit in flat next to the rectangle middle.  Then I iced them all in white buttercream, piped a line around the edge of the bone in blue, and wrote Caleb's name in the middle.

My Little Pony, My Little Pony... - July 2004

I made these My Little Pony themed rainbow cakes for my daughter, Cara's, 5th birthday.

I originally saw this idea on a show that used to come on that Cara and I would watch together called Zoom.  It was a kid's show with crafts, recipes, games, silly skits, etc. that was hosted by kids.

After I mixed the batter I separated it into three bowls and colored the batter rainbow colors.  I layered the colors when I poured the batter in the pan; so when we cut the cake it was colored pink, yellow, and blue like the icing.  That was a fun surprise.  I baked the cake in a Bundt pan.  I cut the cake in half and stood the halves up to look like rainbows.  Then I iced them in buttercream that I had tinted rainbow colors.

The ponies are pictures that I cut out from her My Little Pony toys' packaging and then laminated.  After the cake was iced I put the ponies in various places around the rainbows.  I attached paper that looked like grass around the bottom rainbow and paper that looked like sky around the top rainbow to make it look like one was on the ground and one was in the sky.
